Falsified Medicines – An Introduction
The definition of ‘falsified medicine’ was introduced in order to differentiate it from other illegal medicinal products known as ‘counterfeit or fake medicines’ (those that do not comply with intellectual property rights or that infringe trademark laws). Distinguishing between the two types of illegal medicines facilitates the development of specific strategies for their control. The MHRA inspectorate expect to see the definition of a Falsified Medicine within your Falsified Medicines SOP, mention of Yellow Card reporting and expect ALL staff to be trained on and understand the threat of Falsified Medicines.
What’s Inside?
The subjects within the Falsified Medicines course include (but is not limited to) topics such as the risks and consequences of Falsified Medicines, how to combat the problem, the European Solution, FMD Safety Features and the verification and decommissioning process. Relevant laws are also included along with additional measures you can take to enhance your ability to detect Falsified Medicines through careful inspection.
What will I get out of it?
Detecting Falsified Medicines could be said to be an “art” all in itself. Most are very convincing and extremely difficult to spot. The Falsified Medicine course will show you what to look for in order to positively identify a Falsified Medicine. Ongoing application of the skill will only serve to enhance your powers of perception to near forensic levels. You will also understand the proper definition of a Falsified Medicine as opposed to a fake or counterfeit medicine. Falsification evidence may only show up in the accompanying documentation but even here, you will know what to look for.
Who is it for?
This is for everyone who find themselves in regular contact with medicines. You may be working in despatch/goods-in, or a picker/packer in a wholesaling operation. It’s essential information for everyone including the RP and Licence Holder. Those involved in processing the orders will benefit as evidence of falsification may only be apparent in the paperwork trail that might otherwise be hard to spot or be overlooked. Learning and developing this skill and knowledge actively promotes and enhances patient safety by preventing either ineffective or incorrect ingredients and dosages reaching the patient that may otherwise cause serious harm.
